York Walks - The York Solar System walk
/This is a great walk but be warned if it goes pair shaped with 2 screaming children refusing to go any further because they are so TIRRRRRRED then you, like me will be walking while carrying 2 bikes past a stream of other parents giving you knowing smiles and hoping to god they are not next.
But lets look on the bright side, that may not happen to you and instead you could enjoy this lovely walk created by the Royal Society and British Association Millennium Project and designed and built by three Scientists at the University of York (it must have been a very big lab because its 13 miles long).
Models of our sun and associated planets are spaced out across the walk as they would be if our solar system was reduced in size to fit this stretch of what was the old East Coast main-line railway.
The starting point of the walk is Sim Balk Lane, near York College and there are lots of stops along the way. My favourite stop is at Bishopthorpe, just before Jupiter because it has a great pub called the Woodsman thats fab for lunch and has a playground in the back.
Although the full route is 13 miles long (6.5 miles each way), you can turn back after any planet - especially if you have a child melt down.
My Favourite Planets
Planet Hollywood - I Love a bit or Arny
Uranus - because at heart I'm extremely childish
Makemake - because its the Boaty McBoat face of the dwarf planets
