York Castle Museum and where to find the York Discount Vouchers to visit York attractions for less
/York Castle Museum, The Eye of York, York, YO1 9RY
Imagine if my great, great, great, grandparents broke into your great great, great, great grandparents house, took all their nice stuff and you got invited over to have a look at it (no touching) as long as you made a donation and ate an expensive ropy lunch and bought a T-shirt probably with a picture on it of the stuff they took - welcome to the world of most UK Museums.
Well thats not the case at York Castle Museum because most of it’s stuff is from local people in York. So its a bit more like a really big local charity shop, but without the 200 copies of John Grisham books and broken foot spas.
For these and many other reasons this is a Lamont family favourite. Its essentially a living museum covering 400 years of York history thats packed with Yorkshire peoples stuff from furniture to the crockery, all displayed in recreated rooms, shops and streets.
My favourite thing is the modern history that gives me the opportunity to keep saying to my kids - “I had one of those” when we get to the Walkmans and the ZX Spectrum.
My children's favourite bit is always the recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate which has real shops where they get to buy sweets and watch perplexed staff stare at American children asking to buy candy.
Local Knowledge
Allow plenty of time for this one - you can easily spend 3 - 4 hours here as there is lots to see and do
If you pay to get in your ticket is good for one year
The cafe is not great so better to save food / drink for somewhere else
Buying a ticket for the museum does not get you in the castle by it (Cliffords Tower) thats a separate attraction run by English Heritage
