National Railway Museum and where to find the York Discount Vouchers to visit York attractions for less
/National Railway, Museum, Leeman Road, York, YO26 4XJ
The National Railway Museum is a huge home packed to the hilt with a collection of trains and rail memorabilia as well as loads of ever changing exhibitions.
Its a museum that celebrates all that is railways, but so far I haven’t found a section where you stand packed into a small space with no air-conditioning and with your face inches away from someones arm pit while a small child plays a game / music on their phone on full volume - but perhaps they are working on that one.
Our family favourites are:
Getting on board the Mallard
Riding on the miniature railway - mainly me on that one
The Flying Scotsman in VR and reality
Local Knowledge
Entry into the museum is free but drinks and snacks inside are expensive and not great, so worth bringing your own and eating in the museums gardens
Look out for live demonstrations and talks, there are loads including turntable and steam engine ones
The parking is quite expensive so may be worth parking in town or leaving the car and taking the Museum train to it from the centre of York
You can get around it in about 2 hours
The museum has a library you are interested in railway history
Get your kids to ask questions to the staff, they love it and have lots of facts and stories to share
