Lots of guests ask me where is the best place to have tea in York and my answer (because I have now gone northern) is at home around 6.30 pm. What they mean of course is high tea, I blame Downton Abbey.
Lets talk about high tea, something that should be on everyones to do list on a visit to York. I’m going to go against the grain here because if you ask. most people will say go to Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms. Now don't get me wrong, its fab, bang in the centre of town and I do love a fat rascal scone, but there is always a queue and its always very long.
With that in mind, what if I told you that you could have high tea served in beautiful drawing rooms overlooking stunning gardens in a stately home featured as a location in Downton Abbey. If that sound good then then you should head to Middlethorpe Hall.
It is our favourite place for afternoon tea where we have our in-depth discussions about if its cream or jam first.
And just so you know my favourite ‘tea’ is a fish finger sandwich with crisps and its always cream first on a scone.
